Crowns

Why do dentists put crowns on teeth?

Dentists put crowns on teeth for multiple reasons. One of them may be that the tooth is broken. Sometimes the tooth has had a root canal done, after a root canal the tooth always needs a crown to prevent fracture. Sometimes the tooth has a very large cavity that needs to be covered with a crown. So there's multiple reasons, but dentists do crowns all the time.

What is the difference between dental crowns and a dental bridge?

A bridge is multiple crowns that are connected together. So they are one piece, which makes it very difficult to floss in between the individual teeth. Sometimes a bridge is needed because we're missing a tooth and that's how we fill the gap. Crowns cover individual teeth, so you can floss in the tooth in front, with the tooth behind, but with bridges, sometimes you can't avoid them, sometimes you have to get them done, but that just means that the crowns are all connected together.

What kinds of crowns are good for molars?

Molars are the back teeth, the back chewing teeth that we use to chew our food. So when we put crowns on them, we need a strong material. Typically we put zirconia on those molars. Sometimes we'll do porcelain, sometimes we'll do porcelain with metal, depends on the condition of the tooth and the rest of the mouth, but very commonly we put zirconia on molar teeth.

What kind of crowns are best for front teeth?

Front teeth are what you show when you talk and when you smile. So we like these crowns to be aesthetic and beautiful. So typically we do all porcelain crowns for the front teeth because the looks here matter.

Is it possible to not get a dental crown after a root canal?

Sometimes yes, sometimes it is possible. Typically it's only done on the front teeth. There's very specific instances as to when the tooth itself has to be very strong, there has to be good tooth, not filling, not decaying, the tooth itself has to be in very good condition. Very rarely does this happen on the back teeth. It's usually only on the front teeth that we can do a root canal, but avoid a crown.

How do different crown materials compare?

Well, there's a lot that goes into this. So there's porcelains like zirconia, there's metal crowns. It depends on the condition of the tooth. It depends on what the rest of the mouth looks like. It depends which tooth, because we like something very strong and supportive on the back. We like something a little bit more aesthetic and pretty for the front. So it depends on which tooth we're talking about, but there's lots of materials to choose from.

Are crowns as strong as real teeth?

That depends on the crown. It depends on the material. So some of them are as strong, if not stronger. So when you have a crown biting on top of a normal tooth, the normal tooth is what tends to wear down, and the crown will stay fine. Sometimes metal crowns are softer, so the metal will wear down, but your own natural tooth on the opposite side will stay fine. Depends on the materials.

What type of anesthesia do you need for a crown?

Just local anesthesia is plenty. That's all we need. If the tooth has had a root canal done already, then the tooth itself doesn't feel anything, but the gum around does. So we will always numb, even if it's just a little bit around the gum, but some local anesthesia is all you need for the crown.

What type of care do you need for a dental crown?

Once you have a crown put in your mouth, you treat it exactly like you would any normal tooth. You brush all around it like you would a tooth. You floss in between it like you would a normal tooth. There's absolutely nothing extra that has to get done. You just have to take care of it like all your normal teeth.

What type of life expectancy do you need for a crown?

I would expect a crown to last a bare minimum of five years, but I've seen crowns last for longer. I've seen them last 10, 15, even 20 years. It all depends on how well the crown was made and how well you take care of it. Make sure you come in for your dental cleanings, your brushing at home, flossing at home. All of that helps to extend the life of your crown.
