What is dental bonding?
It's a procedure where we actually glue a little bit of a dental filling material, those white resin, tooth-colored fillings to the surface of the tooth. Depending on what you need and where you need it, it can get glued to just about any surface of the tooth. It's a very simple procedure and absolutely non-painful.
When is dental bonding recommended?
Typically, we recommend it when you have little chips on your teeth along the gum line, where the tooth and the gum meet. Sometimes, due to your bite, heavy brushing, or poor articulation of the teeth, you can get little chips along the gum line. It's very simple to glue a little bit of tooth filling material to those root surfaces. Roots are very sensitive and break down much faster than the tops of the teeth; you can get cavities there much faster, so you're much better off bonding it to protect the root from any further breakdown. Sometimes dental bondings can be done on the front top teeth to change the shape or color of your teeth, making them look more appealing and aesthetic. However, there's a difference between dental bondings and veneers, and we much prefer veneers. In the long term, you get more value for your money with veneers. They don't stain or chip, and you can eat without being cautious about how you bite into things.
Are dental bondings painful?
Typically, no, because we're just gluing some dental material to the tops of the teeth, and we're not really drilling anything out. It's the drilling that tends to hurt, and we're not doing any with bondings. However, when you have little chips along the gum line, right on the root of the tooth, those areas can be very sensitive. That's sometimes why we do the bondings, to cover up the root of the tooth so they're no longer sensitive. We don't have to numb you because the procedure hurts; it's just that we can't blow air or rinse the tooth without causing pain. Typically we don't need any anesthetic, but sometimes we do need to numb you to make you comfortable for the procedure.
Can you brush your teeth and can you floss after dental bondings?
Yes, you can and you should. It's very important for any kind of dental material that you keep it clean. We don't want plaque and bacteria building up around this stuff because it's just going to break down much faster than necessary. So you have to take care of these things at home, you have to brush, and you have to floss.
Are there any special instructions for taking care of bonded teeth?
Typically, no. Just take care of them like you would any other tooth. You have to keep them clean. Don't be afraid. Brush them. Floss them. Get in between all the nooks and crannies. We want everything squeaky clean. So no special instructions other than keeping them clean.
