What are the different types of dental cleanings?
Well, there's the traditional cleaning and then there's a deep cleaning. The difference gets determined by what's in your mouth. It gets determined by what your gums look like, what the bone around your teeth looks like, because if you have gum disease, a typical superficial cleaning is just not good enough for you. So you need something a little bit more involved. It's called a deep cleaning, the fancy word is scaling and root planing, but it all gets determined by what your mouth looks like and what your x-rays tell us.
What is the importance of a dental cleaning?
The whole purpose of it is to remove any leftover plaque and tartar that's been sitting around that you haven't cleaned up. Listen, these are clumps of bacteria because all tartar is, is plaque that didn't get brushed away, that sat around long enough that it hardened and is now hard as a rock sitting on your teeth. And only when you come in for a professional cleaning can we actually get that off. And this bacteria that sits in your mouth affects the rest of your body. Your mouth is not disconnected from the rest of your body. And every time you swallow, you ingest some of that bacteria. So our purpose is to remove all of that, give you a nice clean slate so you can live a long and healthy life.
How often should you get a dental cleaning?
That depends a lot on you. A good healthy mouth should be coming in every six months for a typical cleaning. However, some people have gum disease. They have more things happening in their mouth. They've had a lot of dental work already done, and they just want to stay on top of it to make sure that nothing happens. In that case, we recommend you come in every three to four months just for regular scheduled maintenance.
Is a dental cleaning painful?
It shouldn't be. However, some patients are more sensitive than others. And yeah, you know, you could be a little sensitive and that's fine. But listen, our purpose here is not to hurt you. We just want to do our job, make sure we're doing you the diligence that you need. So if you're sensitive or we're hurting you, please don't be shy. Don't be brave. Don't power through it. Don't suck it up. Just tell us. We have plenty of anesthetic here. We want you to be comfortable so that we can do the work that you need. And you walk out of here feeling nice and clean and happy.
How long does a typical cleaning take?
Well, that depends a lot on you. If you're doing a great job at home, you're brushing really well, you're flossing really well, you haven't let a lot of gunk and stuff build up around your teeth, cleaning can take anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes. If you haven't been doing a good job at home and you're leaving it all for us and really you're only cleaning your teeth two or three times a year, you're coming into the office, then listen, we have a lot more work to do. And this cleaning could easily take over an hour. So it depends a lot on what you're doing at home because that's going to determine what we're doing here.
What happens during a teeth cleaning?
Well, the hygienist is going to go around every single tooth from all sides and clean up anything and everything that you have left behind during your daily tooth brushing. So the job here is to go around every tooth. We should have 32 of them or 28 if you're just missing your wisdom teeth. But every single one has to get cleaned from all sides. So if you're not doing your job at home, well, the hygienist is going to do her job here when you come in for your dental cleaning.
Can the hygienist remove all tartar during the dental cleaning?
Well, that's the job. However, if you have a lot of tartar and you have gum disease and you have tartar that's sitting underneath the gum, a typical cleaning is just not going to get it all. We need a deep cleaning. We need to numb you so we can get in underneath the gum and clean up all of this junk and gunk that you've let build up around your teeth. So like I said, it depends a lot on what you're doing at home. If you're doing a really good job and you're clean and you don't have all that much buildup, super, super easy to clean up all that tartar during a regular cleaning. If you're not so good and you've been slacking, then we need more involved work. It may take several visits, but the whole goal is to, yes, remove all the tartar from every single tooth.
How do I treat sensitive teeth after a dental cleaning?
So it's not uncommon for the teeth to be a little sensitive after you've gotten a cleaning done. We've just removed a layer of plaque and bacteria that's been covering up your teeth and now the teeth are all exposed out into the world and out to your mouth. So yes, some sensitivity is very normal. Honestly, the teeth will get back to normal over the course of a couple of days. If it's a little much, the best product on the market right now is Sensodyne toothpaste. Sensodyne works wonders for sensitivity like this. Use it for a week or two. If you need it, you should be back to normal. Good as new in just a few weeks.
